Substitute  Help

Thank you for being my sub. These students are great. I hope that you enjoy your day here. The bell schedule is hanging on the side of the room next to the windows. Monday-Thursday is one schedule. Friday is another schedule.

Please choose one of the options below for the whole day. The sub directions are the same for both 6th and 7th grade math.

If you are not comfortable teaching math please do the following.

In cabinet 28 and 29, for period 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, there are packets for students to use when I need a sub. Please take the next number that has not been used. Use the same number for for all the classes, the whole day. The numbers are for different packets when I need a sub, not the periods. The packet includes practice math puzzles, a fact coloring picture, logic mazes, and a math story or poem. Students may silently read if they finish the packet. Please, collect the packets by period at the end of each period, and I will grade them.

There is a score sheet on top of each stack of student packets. The students know that they are going to be graded on how they perform. Please score each class. If there are individuals who stand out either positively or negatively please mention that. Please keep a running score on the board so students can see in real time how they are doing.

Period 7 will go to the 7th computer lab in room 9, and do math games from my web site. They know how to do this.

If you feel comfortable teaching math please click "Assignments" on the 6th and 7th sites.

Click on the assignment links. Check what the calendar says you should be doing. Scroll down until you see that specific assignment to teach.        6th assignments                7th assignments

Attached to this information is a class evaluation score sheet.

I have one rule -

BE KIND

Room Procedures

  1. Warm-up and agenda

    1. Students silently do the warm-up that is on the screen. This is review.

    2. The agenda is on the front whiteboard. The agenda will let students know what will be due each day.

    3. When students are finished they will read silently.

    4. Mr. Kee will then go over the warm-up. This is a time for students who didn’t understand to ask questions.

  2. Check last assignment

    1. After the assignment is corrected Mr. Kee will answer students’ questions.

    2. Warm-up and last assignment should take about 10-15 minutes.

  3. New concept presented

    1. Direct Instruction -- Students will take notes in their math notebook.

    2. Students then move towards independence by doing example problems in class.

    3. This will take about 15-20 minutes.

  4. Assignment

    1. For the rest of the period students will work on the assignment. This is homework if not finished.

    2. Students are expected to show their work.

    3. Students will circle or box their answers to visually separate them from the rest of their work.

    4. If a student finishes early they may check their work with someone near them who is also finished.

    5. Students may also silently read or work on another class assignment if they have it with them.

    6. Worksheets are generally corrected the next day.

  5. If students are absent they need to turn in finished work in the absent/redo box for their class period.

  6. Redoing daily assignments and tests

    1. Do not erase or change any of the original answers.

    2. Students need to redo the problems they missed. This can be done on another piece of paper and stapled to the back of the original assignment.

    3. Students need to turn in redone work in the absent/redo box for their class.

  7. A paper without a complete heading- name, period, date - is put in the black hole.

    1. If a student finds their paper in the black hole, they need to put the heading on the paper and turn it in the absent/redo box.

  8. To get help, students need to:

    1. Listen carefully to the instructions when Mr. Kee gives them.

    2. Check their math notebook.

    3. Raise their hand and Mr. Kee will help.

    4. If Mr. Kee is busy helping someone, go ahead and quietly ask another student nearby.

  9. No food in the classroom.

  10. When Mr. Kee wants the class’s attention he will generally say “back to me”, expecting them to look at him, and listen for his instruction.

  11. End of period dismissal is signaled by Mr. Kee, and not by the clock or alarm.

  12. Students may sharpen their pencil when Mr. Kee or another student is not talking to the whole class.

  13. Students can get a drink or use the bathroom at any time between classes.

  14. Ask permission to leave the classroom.

  15. Students are too old to tattle, but please do tell Mr. Kee if they are hurt, or someone needs help.

  16. If a student feels like they are going to vomit:

    1. Go directly to the bathroom even if Mr. Kee is speaking to the class.

  17. As planned, when the fire alarm rings, students will quietly proceed to the front of the school by the fence.

  18. When someone knocks at the door or comes in the room, students need to continue working.

  19. Cupboards, drawers, closet, and other teacher areas are only for Mr. Kee.

If anything would make your sub time more helpful please leave me a note. Thank you, Tim Kee
