Course Description:

Grade 7 Math is aligned with the State Standards. These standards were established and sequenced to provide a consistent, clear and relevant base level of knowledge which will provide a foundation for a deeper mathematical understanding as the students progress toward high school and more rigorous standards. These standards are a component of a comprehensive K-12 alignment in mathematics. The standards are designed to be relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in high school, college and careers.

In Grade 7, instructional time will focus on four critical areas:

  • Developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships

  • Developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations.

  • Solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two-and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

  • Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

The course topics are: rational numbers and expressions; probability and proportions; and shapes and angles.

Course Expectations:

Students will be able to:

1.  Make sense of mathematical problems and persevere in solving them.

2.  Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

3.  Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

4.  Model with mathematics

5.  Use appropriate tools strategically.

6.  Attend to precision.

7.  Look for and make use of structure.

8.  Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Grading Policies:

Content Knowledge and Skills: (80% of  Grade)

Any direct assessment of a standard or its learning targets including:

  • Tests and Quizzes

  • Writing Samples / Inquiry Lab Write-Ups

  • Problem Solving Work Samples

  • Projects – student’s own work

  • Alternative Assessments – Verbal etc.

Participation/Citizenship: (20% of  Grade)

  • Openers / Warm-ups

  • Daily Work / In class assignments

  • Homework

  • Personal Responsibility

    • Effort in Learning

    • Participation

    • Classroom Preparedness

    • Adhering to Due Dates

  • Grading Criteria:  Academic grades under the Proficiency Based Learning model will reflect a student’s master of the subject’s knowledge and skills according to state standards, allowing teachers to be more objective in their grading practices.  Therefore, extra credit will not be provided.  Academic grades are calculated based off a weighted scale where 80% reflects content knowledge and skills, and 20% reflects participation/citizenship.

  • Proficiency Based Learning Grading Scale:

A (Master)

B (Approaching Master)

C (Proficient)

I  (Incomplete)

Class Participation:  Students are expected to participate in all classroom activities.

  • Reassessment: In order to demonstrate proficiency, students must score a 70% or better on the assessment, which is equivalent to a “C” average.  “D” grades will no longer be awarded to student work.  If an assessment is below a 70%, they have the opportunity to retake the assessment and get additional support from the teacher or building support services. If all, or most, assessments are failed within a grading period, a student may earn an “F”.  However, if a student is making adequate progress toward proficiency and utilizing resources available, they will be assigned an Incomplete and will have 10 school days to demonstrate proficiency on missing/incomplete assessments at the end of the trimester.  Third trimester incompletes will result failures.  Students may be given opportunities to retake assessments that they fail in order to demonstrate proficiency, provided that they are making adequate progress toward proficiency.  The assessment grade will NOT be the average of all the assessments.  The highest grade for each assessment will be awarded to the student.

Academic Support:  Fleming middle school provides academic support opportunities during daily intramural periods as assigned by individual teachers.  Students that need to complete work, receive additional help or make up assessments/assignments can use the intramural period for this purpose.  Also, FMS has an "After School Tutoring" program that is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays where students can receive additional help.  If you are interested in the after school program please contact the FMS office.

Flexibility Plans for TAG Students:

Assessment:  TAG students' needs will be assessed by:

1) Unit and Trimester Tests

2) Oregon Statewide Assessment Tests

3) Monitoring of daily work

Accommodations:  Based on the above assessments, any necessary modification to the curriculum to better meet the needs of TAG students will be done by one or a combination of the following:

1) Allowing students to do most difficult first in each lesson.  Scoring at 90% or above will excuse the student from further practice with those concepts.  The student may then move on to the next concept or work on supplementary material listed below in number 4.

2) Students will be allowed to work independently.  They will be required to pass each chapter test that the class is required to do with at least a 90% before going on.

3) Students will be allowed to take a pretest before every chapter or unit of study that the class is doing.  If the student scores a 90% or above, they may work on the supplementary materials while the rest of the class is working on that chapter.

4) Supplementary materials available are Applications, Problem solving, Decision making, Computer activities, and Graphing calculator activities.

It will be expected that any student working in the above fashions will not disturb the class and will be making acceptable progress.   Otherwise, the privilege to work independently will be lost and the student will be expected to follow the regular curriculum.

This is being offered to Math TAG students because students can learn at varying rates and levels.  The accommodations will not add additional work on top of existing course requirements.
